A dramatically sited 19th-century coastal fort turned military museum on the Inishowen Peninsula, where clifftop walks, underground bunkers, and sweeping views over Lough Swilly meet a thriving café and art scene.
Explore 200 years of coastal defence history through interactive displays, an audio-visual theatre, and restored underground bunkers. Exhibits cover the Napoleonic era, both World Wars, and the 1938 handover of the Treaty port to Ireland. Allow about an hour for the museum alone.
This exhibition space houses the Rockhill Collection — an extensive private collection of military memorabilia including uniforms, equipment, and rank insignia from Irish Defence Forces and allied nations. Also home to art exhibitions, yoga classes, and two virtual reality experiences.
Three signposted paths loop around Dunree Point. Walk 1 is an easy clifftop ramble with superb birdwatching. Walk 2 climbs steps to the Top Fort guns, rewarding strong legs with panoramic Lough Swilly views. Walk 3 is the longest, circling the perimeter past Crummie's Bay with distant sight of the Grianan of Aileach.
Three habitats converge here — open sea, rocky coast, and blanket bog — attracting rare Choughs, Fulmars, and nesting seabirds along the cliffs. Look for Harbour Porpoise, Bottlenose Dolphins, and even Otters hunting below the cliffs. The wildlife discovery room in the Saldanha Suite has detailed displays.
Inish Adventures runs kayaking taster sessions and guided trips from the renovated Fort Dunree pier, exploring sea caves and the rugged coastline. Snorkelling and coasteering also available. All levels welcome, from beginners to experienced paddlers.
Self-styled 'most scenic coffee shop in Ireland', The Grind serves breakfast and lunch with a view over the water. Al fresco seating in a sheltered space for breezier days. Open daily alongside the museum.
The longest-established professional art company in Inishowen has its studio and workshop spaces at Fort Dunree. Expect rotating contemporary art exhibitions, community projects, and outreach programmes connecting artists with the public.
