A stunning 16th-century tower house perched on a rocky outcrop on the shores of Galway Bay — once a gathering place for Yeats, Shaw and Synge during Ireland's literary revival. Note: the castle is currently closed to the public due to an ongoing ownership dispute.
Even while closed, Dunguaire Castle is one of Ireland's most photographed landmarks. The 75-foot tower house sits spectacularly on Galway Bay, just 300 metres from Kinvara village. Walk the shoreline path for the classic reflection shot — especially striking at sunset.
A self-guided tour takes you across four floors: a gift shop on the ground level, a banqueting hall on the second, period-furnished rooms on the third, and the top floor furnished as left by the last occupants in the 1970s. Climb to the rooftop for panoramic views across Kinvara Bay — the walkway is narrow, so take care.
The castle's renowned four-course banquet includes mead, oak-smoked salmon, leek and potato soup, chicken with mushroom sauce, and apple pie. The evening features live music, storytelling, and poetry from Ireland's great writers. Normally runs April to October with sittings at 5:30pm and 8:45pm. Booking essential.
The charming fishing village of Kinvara is a short stroll away, known for its colourful harbour, traditional music sessions in local pubs, and seafood restaurants. It's an ideal base for exploring both Galway Bay and the Burren.
