A 400-hectare nature reserve in south Galway where rare turlough wetlands meet ancient woodland — once the home of Lady Gregory and the creative heart of the Irish Literary Revival.
The Copper Beech in the walled garden bears the carved initials of W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, J.M. Synge, Seán O'Casey, and other literary giants who visited Lady Gregory here. A plaque helps identify the 15+ signatures. The garden also features a marble bust of Maecenas, a sundial, picnic tables under old yews, and a replacement Catalpa tree planted by Lady Gregory's grand-daughters.
An easy 20–30 minute loop past the site of Coole House, through the walled garden to the Autograph Tree, then through woodland overlooking the river and turlough, finishing via the red deer enclosure near the Visitor Centre. Fully waymarked, suitable for all ages.
This 1–1.5 hour walk connects the woods immortalised by Yeats. It passes a viewing point over Coole Lake and the vast wetland, then goes deeper into the woods past the stable yard, 18th-century stone walls, and a limekiln. Look for bluebells in spring, red squirrels, jays, and dragonflies depending on the season.
Coole is a Special Protection Area for wintering waterfowl. The star attraction is the Whooper Swan (peak ~324 birds), alongside Wigeon, Pochard, Mallard, and smaller numbers of Teal, Curlew, and Lapwing. A bird hide overlooks the wetlands. In summer, look for Common Sandpiper breeding at Coole Lake.
The Visitor Centre houses an audio-visual exhibition covering the ecology, history, and literary connections of Coole. A site leaflet is available here, and staff can advise on seasonal wildlife. Free guided tours are sometimes offered — enquire inside.
Set beside the main car park in one of the original estate stables, Cobblestone Café serves breakfast and lunch daily: teas, coffees, home-baked pastries and cakes, hearty soups, quiches, sandwiches, salads, and daily specials. Indoor seating in a historic setting.
