Ireland's premier dolphin-watching experience: a marine biologist-led boat trip into the Shannon Estuary, home to Europe's largest resident group of bottlenose dolphins — with a 98%+ encounter rate over 25+ years.
The flagship 2-hour (or longer) guided trip aboard the vessel Murúch, departing from the Castle Pier. Marine biologist Mary Kate Bolger narrates throughout, identifying individual dolphins by name and explaining their behaviour. Trips run daily April–October, with multiple sailings in peak summer (July/August).
The Shannon Estuary supports around 200 bottlenose dolphins — some of the largest in the world (up to 14 ft, 800 lbs). You'll see breeding groups with calves in family pods. Though wild and never guaranteed, the encounter rate exceeds 98%.
The Mouth of the Shannon is an EU Special Area of Conservation. Expect grey seals basing on storm beaches, colonies of gannets, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars and kittiwakes, plus a herd of feral goats on Rehy Hill. Minke whales appear in late summer/early autumn.
The trip follows dramatic coastline past Carrigaholt's 15th-century tower house, a Napoleonic fort, and the geologically famous cliffs of the Loop Head Peninsula and North Kerry — all visible from the water.

Carrigaholt village itself has excellent vantage points to spot dolphins from the shore. It's a great way to preview the estuary before or after your boat trip.
