A dramatic, crowd-free alternative to the Cliffs of Moher, the Kilkee Cliff Walk offers 8km of sheer limestone cliffs, sea stacks, and Atlantic panoramas — all free and open year-round right from the edge of Kilkee town.
Bishop's Island is a striking sea stack severed from the mainland over centuries, now a noisy gull-nesting colony. Nearby, the Diamond Rocks — quartz-veined limestone outcrops — shimmer at low tide and are a photographer's favourite.
Named after the 19th-century sailing vessel that wrecked here in 1836, this shallow bay holds the scattered remains of the Intrinsic. Accessible to snorkellers and divers in calm conditions (approx. 5–10m depth), though visibility varies.
The cliffs form part of the Loop Head Peninsula Special Protection Area. Look for breeding fulmars, peregrine falcons, choughs, and kittiwakes. Winter brings waders like turnstones, sanderlings, and purple sandpipers to the rocky shore.
A short climb from the loop trail rewards with sweeping panoramas over the Shannon Estuary, Loop Head Lighthouse, and — on clear days — the Kerry coastline. A quieter spot away from the cliff edge.
A well-marked 5–8km looped trail starting at Diamond Rocks Café. Follow the cliff edge past the Pollock Holes, the Amphitheatre, and Bishop's Island sea stack before looping inland via Dunlicky Castle and St Kee's Well. Allow 2–3 hours for the full 8km loop; shorter options of 1.8km (30 min) and 4km (1 hour) suit families or tight schedules.
A series of limestone rock pools carved by the Atlantic, right beside the trailhead. At low tide they become sheltered, crystal-clear pools perfect for a family-friendly dip. Check tide tables before visiting; swimming is only safe at low tide.
