A wooded red-sandstone gorge on the Clare River, where a chain of waterfalls and rapids tumbles along the Limerick–Tipperary border and two waymarked loops weave through dense forest.
The longer loop follows purple waymarkers, gaining ground away from the river and passing a stone footbridge before a wooden one near Clare Falls. Crossing that bridge takes you from County Tipperary into County Limerick. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours.
A family-friendly option marked with green arrows, starting from the metal swing gate at the left of the bridge over the Clare River. It follows upper paths and returns at the wooden footbridge. Roughly 30 minutes to an hour.
Mature holly, pine and hazel shelter red squirrels, wrens, wagtails and chaffinches. Later around the wooded paths, bright pink rhododendron bushes are in full bloom in June and July.
The Clare River carves a picturesque red sandstone gorge, running through a series of waterfalls, rapids and natural rock pools. The falls are at their most impressive after heavy rainfall, and the lower glen is popular with kayakers.
Beside the trailhead there are picnic areas and a playground, and toilets in the car park. It makes an easy base for a picnic before or after the walk.
