A crenellated Gothic Revival fantasy of towers and turrets, begun in 1798 and kept alive by volunteers — though public tours are currently paused for works. Check before you travel.
Designed in 1798 by Francis Johnston and more than a decade in the building, Charleville is counted among Ireland's finest early-19th-century castles, with limestone walls, towers, turrets and battlements. Its 'tin soldier fortress' look celebrates a victory over a French revolutionary expedition.
Admission is by guided tour only. Inside you see ornate plasterwork, hand-carved stairways, the main hall and the library; tours last around 45 minutes. Public tours are currently paused, so confirm before travelling.
The castle has a long reputation for ghosts and has featured on Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted. Paranormal investigations have been hosted here alongside more conventional events.
Charleville stands in its own demesne near Tullamore, in Ireland's most ancient primordial oak woods, once the haunting grounds of druids. The tree-lined avenue to the front gate is an attraction in itself.

Day-to-day running is done by a core group of volunteers who show guests around, plan events and help with upkeep. The Trust welcomes new volunteers, and there's an avenue pothole restoration fundraiser.
