One of Ireland's largest military installations, Charles Fort is a massive 17th-century star-shaped fortress whose ramparts overlook Kinsale Harbour. It withstood a 13-day siege in the Williamite Wars before falling.
Walk 12 acres of bastions, barracks, turrets and moats at one of the country's largest military installations, designed by William Robinson and inspired by the French engineer Vauban. The outer defences rise up to 16 metres.
Leisurely walks along the ramparts look out over Kinsale Harbour and the town, and give fine views out to sea. Surfaces are uneven and slippery and the site is challenging in places, so take care near the edges.
A state-of-the-art exhibition centre in the old barracks covers the fort's 200 years as a British Army barracks and the harsh daily life of the enlisted soldier, including the married soldiers' quarters.
Guides lead tours and explain the self-guiding route; tickets are booked online. Ask about the story of the White Lady, said to walk the battlements after hurling herself from the parapets on her wedding night.
The on-site café serves tea, coffee, toasties, pastries and desserts, open daily 10:00 to 17:00.
