A spectacular 5-mile cliff-top trail from Ballycotton village to Ballyandreen beach, flanked by wildflower meadows on one side and the Atlantic on the other. The views of the iconic black lighthouse and the working harbour make this one of East Cork's finest coastal walks.
The most popular option: park at the trailhead, follow the narrow foot-worn track west toward Ballytrasna. About 3.5 km each way, taking 2–2.5 hours return. Benches along the route let you pause to soak in the views of Ballycotton Lighthouse. Pass side paths leading down to rocky coves and beaches — take care on descents, especially in wet weather.
Continue past Ballytrasna to Ballyandreen beach, then follow the trail inland along narrow country roads back to Ballycotton village. The full route covers about 13 km and can take up to 5 hours. Best suited to experienced walkers — the road sections require care and vigilance.
About halfway along the short walk, the trail passes Ballytrasna — a small, secluded sandy beach perfect for a rest stop. It's only accessible on foot via the cliff walk, so it stays quiet even at peak times.
Before or after the walk, explore the colourful fishing village. Visit the RNLI lifeboat station (souvenir shop open Sunday afternoons in summer), grab fish and chips at TrawlerBoyz, or enjoy a pint at the Blackbird pub with its beer garden and live music.
The cliffs are rich in birdlife: look for peregrine falcons, choughs, and oystercatchers overhead or near rocky inlets. During winter months, scan the water for dolphins and whales. Over 300 bird species have been recorded in the Ballycotton area, making it a superb spot for sea-watching during spring and autumn migrations.
