Restored Victorian gardens and arboretum overlooking the River Nore Valley — home to champion trees, grand avenues, woodland trails, and a charming tea room in a Turner conservatory.
The arboretum is renowned across Europe for its specimen trees from Asia and South America. Look for Coast Redwoods, Giant Redwoods, Japanese Cedars, and several champion trees notable for their height, girth, or age. Most significant trees are labelled with Latin and common names.
Two stunning Victorian avenues. The Monkey Puzzle Avenue was replanted in 1861–62 and trees now thrive — several are seed-bearing and listed as threatened by the IUCN. The Noble Fir Walk runs about ¼ mile with trees set in precise rows, replanted during the 1999 restoration.
The cast-iron conservatory, designed by Richard Turner (of Kew Gardens and Dublin Botanic Gardens fame, 1853–56), now houses a tea room serving freshly brewed teas, coffee, and home baking. On sunny days, sit on the terrace overlooking the flower terraces.
Three waymarked trails start from the car park: the Woodstock Loop (4.5 km) descends to Inistioge village and returns via the River Nore; the Waterfall Loop (4.5 km) leads to a cascading waterfall; the Ladies Loop (3 km) is a shorter woodland circuit. All are moderate grade.
A recently upgraded playground for children under 14, with inclusive equipment: wheelchair-accessible castle, see-saw, roundabout, and sensory boards. The 18th-century walled garden contains fruit trees, vegetables, and a herbaceous border. Adjacent, the three-tiered flower terraces were completed in the 1850s and align on the Turner Conservatory, once featuring elaborate Victorian bedding schemes and coloured gravel paths.
The Winter Garden (1860s) features four sunken parterre panels within a massive granite embankment. Nearby, the atmospheric Rockery — created from excavation spoil — has a pond, islands, and a spring. At the top, Knox's Bower summer house offers views to Brandon Hill.
