A working West Cork farm where you lead a friendly alpaca along a riverside trail past pools, cascades and the waterfall that gave the farm its name. Visits are strictly by appointment.
Ireland's first alpaca walks, taking around 40 minutes along a trail past fields, young forestry and along the river under old oaks, finishing at the waterfall. You walk the males; the walk is steep and uneven in places, so wear sensible footwear.
The marked riverside trail, past pools and cascades under old oak and holly trees and on to the waterfall, is open to the general public by appointment only. Entry is 5 euro per adult and 2.50 euro per child.
Before setting off you meet the ponies, donkeys and hens, then the female alpacas, and hear a little about the animals and their history. A gentle, hands-on start that suits families and younger children.
Bring a picnic for after your walk and eat at the picnic table on site. The riverside pools are shallow enough for children to play in, and there is a swimming hole with a gazebo for those staying on the farm.
A cosy self-catering cabin sleeps four beside a Bronze Age stone row, looking onto the castle with mountains behind. It has a basic kitchen (cold water only), an outdoor gas shower, a toilet nearby and a picnic table and BBQ on request.
From the farm you can follow the Cascades Walk down the far side of the river to Drimoleague village, or the Glonaclohy Walk up the mountain past lakes for panoramic views. Serious walkers can continue all the way to Gougane Barra.
