A beautifully restored 19th-century walled garden hidden within 170 hectares of native woodland — a tranquil botanical gem with a compelling, bittersweet history just outside Kilrush.
Wander gravel paths through a stunning collection of magnolias, acers, banana trees, monkey puzzles and hydrangeas — all thriving in the area's uniquely mild micro-climate. Discover the unusual horizontal maze, the beech maze trained espalier-style against the old stone walls, the elegant Victorian glasshouse, and the charming summer house with views across the garden.
The interpretive centre tells the story of the Vandeleur family — their role in shaping Kilrush and the darker legacy of mass evictions during the famine era. The new permanent Legacy Exhibition houses the ornate 1864 Vandeleur-Phelps Fireplace and the dazzling Frank O'Connor Butterfly Collection, a lifetime's work documenting West Clare's butterflies and habitats.
Just across from the garden entrance, the Coillte Outdoors Forest Recreation Area offers 160 hectares of mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland with marked trails. Some original trees planted by the Vandeleurs over 100 years ago still stand. Every Saturday at 9:30am, a free Parkrun 5km takes place here — all are welcome.
The on-site garden centre stocks shrubs, bedding plants, bulbs, herbs, trees and seasonal flowers — many grown right in the walled garden. The indoor Plant Boutique specialises in houseplants, pots and accessories, with friendly staff on hand to advise.
Housed in the restored stable block, the award-winning Brambles Woodland Café serves hearty breakfasts, lunches, paninis, sandwiches, homemade cakes and scones. Hot food served 10am–3:30pm daily, with tea, coffee and sweet treats available all day. Takeaway coffees are perfect for a stroll through the gardens or woods.
Guided tours are available upon request and included in the admission price. Alternatively, set your own pace on a self-guided tour. The ticket also covers access to the interpretive centre — book online in advance.
