A hidden woodland waterfall tucked inside the Tourmakeady People's Millennium Forest on the shores of Lough Mask — a short, serene walk rewards you with a cascading falls and a perfect picnic spot.
The 2.5 km looped nature trail (Easy, ~1 hr) winds through mixed woodland of oak, birch, ash and Scots pine, following purple waymarkers to the waterfall. The falls cascade into a broad plunge pool where the inflowing river meets the Glensaul River. A small shelter sits near the falls.
A shorter 1.5 km offshoot trail (Easy, ~30 min) skirts a man-made lake stocked with brown trout, popular with anglers. The lake path is less steep than the nature trail and links back to the car park.
Start from the Community Centre in Tourmakeady village for a 4–5 km loop (~1.5 hrs) that takes in the waterfall, woodland, a wildfowl pond, and views of the Partry Mountains before circling back on forestry roads.
Keep an eye out for red squirrels, foxes, badgers, pine martens, herons and a rich variety of woodland birds along the trail. The mixed habitats make this a rewarding spot for nature lovers.
Several picnic tables and benches are dotted along the trail and near the waterfall, making it an ideal spot to unpack lunch with the sound of cascading water in the background.
Extend your visit by walking down to the jetty on Lough Mask for fine views across the water to the Partry Mountains. The ruins of the ancient Christ Church are also nearby.
