A working fishing pier and two sandy beaches on a short peninsula along the Wild Atlantic Way — excellent for swimming, fossil hunting, and sweeping Atlantic views towards the Aran Islands and Kerry mountains.
Seafield holds a Green Coast Award with 'Excellent' water quality (2021–2024). A designated swimming area is marked, and lifeguards patrol daily 11am–7pm from 1 July to 31 August. The two sandy beaches lie either side of the pier — the harbour side is the safer, more sheltered bathing spot.
Fossils Ireland runs 2-hour guided tours on the western beach, exploring rocks from the Namurian stage (~320 million years old). You'll see fossilised plants (lepidodendron, calamites), marine ammonoids (goniatites), and trace fossils. Tours are tide-dependent; book ahead. Oct–Mar by appointment only (+353 85 718 8830 / [email protected]). Meet at the free public car park.
The busy fishing pier is still actively used by local boats landing lobster, salmon, bass, herring, and mackerel. A slipway accommodates small craft. Anglers fish from the pier itself — it's known locally for wrasse and other species. The pier was recently lengthened and improved.
Miles of golden sand and quiet rural roads offer gentle walking and cycling. Views stretch south to Doonbeg and the Kerry mountains, and north to the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher. Mutton Island, where St. Senan founded a 6th-century church, is clearly visible offshore. Seasonal bird watching adds another reason to linger.
