A dramatic 13th-century Norman ruin overlooking a wildlife-rich park — and possibly the architectural blueprint for Edward I's great Welsh castles. Free, open year-round, and a short stroll from Roscommon town.
Walk through the twin-towered gatehouse — the standout feature, with one tower still holding its vaulted roof. Trace the four D-shaped corner towers and the low stone footings of the curtain wall. Look for the large rectangular Tudor windows added by Sir Nicholas Malby in the 1570s, clearly visible on the north-east tower. An information panel at the entrance sets out the full history.
The park's seasonal turlough — a limestone wetland that fills in winter and drains in summer — draws waterfowl and wildflowers. A raised birdwatching deck overlooks it. The adjacent lake, Loughnaneane ('lake of the birds'), is ringed by birch and fern, with a gravel-and-grass viewing terrace framing the castle ruin.
A network of easy paths winds through the 14-acre park, dotted with five hand-carved wooden sculptures drawn from Irish myth and history — among them Cú Chulainn, Queen Maeve of Connacht, and Felim O'Connor. The Nature Chair beside the pond invites a quiet pause. Buggy- and wheelchair-friendly throughout.
This ancient artificial island dwelling on the lake was a traditional power base of the Ó Conchobair kings and is steeped in myth: Fergus Mac Róich, King of Ulster, is said to be buried on its shores. Interpretive signage explains its archaeology and folklore.
On weekends from late May to mid-September, free guided tours of the south-west tower run from 10:00 to 17:00. The tour takes you into areas normally closed off, with expert commentary on the castle's architecture and turbulent history. Allow about 1.5 hours for a full visit.
