Red Strand is a small sandy beach in a sheltered horseshoe bay between Clonakilty and Rosscarbery, with clean water, consistent surf and views across to Galley Head lighthouse. A Green Coast-awarded beach, it stays quiet because there is no car park and almost nothing on site.
The sheltered bay has exceptionally clean water and good depth, and is noticeably calmer than nearby Long Strand and Inchydoney. There is no lifeguard, so check conditions and avoid rough weather. Access from the roadside is a short, level walk onto the sand.
The beach sits between two green headlands, one carrying the iconic Galley Head lighthouse. It is a good spot for a stroll with the lighthouse view from the shore, and a fine viewpoint on a clear day.
Red Strand has reasonably consistent surf all year round and is a popular surf spot, though more sheltered than Long Strand just around the coast. The Green Coast bathing-water status points to clean water for a session.
West Cork Sauna, a wood-fired barrel sauna, operates at the beach year-round on selected days. Book ahead through its website or WhatsApp rather than turning up on spec.
