A tiny stand of Scots pines on a dark Connemara lake, mirrored in still water beneath the Twelve Bens — the view that has become shorthand for the west of Ireland.
The pine-covered island, the flat lough and the Twelve Bens stacked behind it make this one of the most photographed scenes in the west. Early morning and evening give the best light and calmest water for reflections, though broken cloud and overcast weather can be just as atmospheric.
A short path drops from the road to the lough edge, where you can pick your way closer to the pine island. Depending on water levels the island may not be reachable, and the ground is often damp and muddy, so wear sturdy footwear.
Off the R344 in the Inagh Valley, a 19-hectare shoreline strip protects a rare stand of native sessile oak. A flat, well-marked 2 km loop keeps the island and mountains in view, and spring brings bluebells, wood anemone and primrose while red squirrels work the canopy.
The mountains rise straight from the lough. The Glencoaghan Horseshoe is a demanding 16–17 km ridge walk over six peaks taking 8–9 hours; the shorter Derryclare horseshoe (11–14 km) still needs hill experience, proper kit and settled weather.
The viewpoint sits on the N59 between Maam Cross and Clifden, part of the Wild Atlantic Way. Continue up the Inagh Valley to Kylemore Abbey, about 20 km on, or turn south on the R341 for Roundstone and Clifden.
