One of Ireland's most intact Georgian mansions, still filled with the Cobbe family's original furnishings, sits at the heart of a 30-acre working farm with rare breeds, a 250-year-old walled garden and a deer-filled demesne.
Rare and traditional breeds roam 30 acres here: Irish Draught and Falabella horses, Kerry and Irish Moiled cattle, four-horned Jacob sheep, Gloucester Old Spot pigs and alpacas. Don't miss the 'Mooternity Ward' for new arrivals; dogs are not allowed on the farm.
The 250-year-old walled garden holds apple trees still fruiting after a century, rose-lined borders and two greenhouses built in 1905. Nearby, the pond attracts swans, ducks and geese, and the aviary is home to budgies, lovebirds and Bengal owls Ben and Boo.
Wander the demesne's gentle pastures and hidden woodland trails and watch for the resident deer. Tucked in the park are the mid-15th-century ruins of Lanistown Castle, later used as a dining hall by the Cobbe family.
A 50-minute guided tour leads you through the grand reception rooms, including the Red Drawing Room, showcasing original 18th-century furniture and art and the story of the Cobbe family. The tour includes entry to the farm.
See the unique 18th-century family museum, packed with antiquities worldwide including treasures from Captain Cook's voyages. Then step into the immersive servants' quarters and Georgian kitchen, brought to life with ambient sound and projected visuals.
Refuel at Brambles Café, the on-site anchor café serving hot and cold food in the cobbled 18th-century courtyard, which also has a forge with original tools. The adjoining Courtyard Kitchen hosts cookery masterclasses and seasonal food events.
