Things to Do
Biodiversity Boardwalk and Peatlands Exhibition
The boardwalk, a first of its kind in Ireland, meanders through glassy lakes and regenerating bog, telling the story of the midlands raised bogs. In the exhibition look out through the observation windows for hares, bog cotton, curlews and skylarks.
Heritage exhibitions
Interpretive displays cover a Neolithic farmstead, the early Christian monastery founded by Saint Erc, the 1798 rebellion and Captain John Doorly, plus a Famine cottage, blacksmith's forge, hedge school and fairy village.
Play areas and mini golf
The Funky Forest indoor play centre, a large outdoor play area and an 18-hole crazy golf course with a heritage twist (castle, barge and horseshoe holes) are all included in admission. Allow around three hours for a family visit.
Road train
The electric Dotto Muson River Road Train takes a ten-minute trip through 60 acres of ancient woodland, rewilding peatland and lakes, passing views of the Hill of Allen. It runs from 11am every hour until 5pm and is wheelchair friendly, with two wheelchair spaces in the back carriage.
Foran's Wood trails
Sixty acres of meandering trails cross mineral and bog woodland named after the last family to farm here. The bog section feels bouncier underfoot and is full of silver birch, froghan and heather, with dragonflies, butterflies and red squirrels.
Purple Heather Café and picnic area
The café serves freshly made lunches, snacks, junior meals and hot scones, and opens from 10am on any day the park is open, with last hot-food orders at 4.30pm. There is WIFI in the café and a new sheltered picnic area with seating for 150.
Plan Your Visit
- Hours: Open every day 10am to 6pm, last admission at 4pm. In June 2026 the park opens to the general public only from 2pm to 6pm on weekdays because of morning school tours. In-season events (Easter, Halloween) can sell out online.
- Parking: Free car park on site.
- Food: Purple Heather Café for coffee, light lunches, junior meals and scones; open from 10am whenever the park is open, last hot-food orders 4.30pm. A sheltered picnic area beside the café seats 150 for outdoor dining.
