A 5,000-year-old Neolithic cemetery crowning the highest hills in Meath, where the equinox sunrise still lights up ancient carved stones inside Cairn T.
The main event is the steep 20–25 minute walk up Carnbane East to Cairn T, the largest and most significant tomb. The climb is short but tough — wear sturdy footwear. At the top, you're at the highest point in Meath (275m), with said views across 18 counties on a clear day.
At sunrise around the spring and autumn equinoxes (approx. 21 March and 23 September), a beam of sunlight enters Cairn T's passage and slowly illuminates the carved backstone over about 50 minutes. The OPW opens the entrance so small groups can witness it — an unforgettable experience, cloud permitting.
Among the kerbstones ringing Cairn T sits a large carved stone known as the Hag's Chair. It was used as a Mass Rock during the penal times and may have served as an inauguration seat in the early medieval period. Look for the faint cross and weathered megalithic carvings near its base.
Cairn T is surrounded by several smaller passage tombs (Cairns S, U, V and others) scattered across the hilltop. Together they form one of Ireland's most important prehistoric cemeteries, with around 30 monuments spread across the four peaks of Slieve na Calliagh.
After your hike, head to the Loughcrew Megalithic Centre near the car park. Nelly's Café opens daily from 11am serving Bewleys tea, coffee, homemade cakes, and award-winning Mauds ice cream. The courtyard is a perfect spot to relax.
About 3km from the cairns, the Naper family's 17th-century gardens feature a yew walk, water gardens, a medieval motte, fairy trails for children, and a coffee shop. A modest admission fee applies (separate from the free cairns).
