A rare surviving example of Anglo-Norman architecture in Kerry — two hulking 15th-century towers linked by an arch, standing over the River Feale at the heart of Listowel. Free guided tours bring its dramatic siege history to life.
Access is by guided tour only. Knowledgeable OPW guides lead you through the castle's history — including the gripping 28-day siege of 1600, when just 18 rebels held out against 300 English troops before falling to Sir Charles Wilmot. Tours last about 40 minutes, limited to 12 visitors. Groups of 10+ must pre-book.
Tackle the steep, winding stone staircases to reach the upper floors of the two surviving four-storey towers. An external staircase added during the 2005 restoration helps access the top. Sturdy footwear is essential — these are genuine medieval steps with uneven walkways.
Look up at the northern wall for the carved stone face of Tomás an Ápa (Thomas the Ape). This grim medieval gargoyle is said to represent Thomas FitzGerald, one of the local Norman lords.
The climb is rewarded with one of the best views in Listowel — across the town, Listowel Racecourse, and the winding River Feale below. The castle's elevated riverside position makes it a striking photo spot at sunset.
Seanchaí — the Kerry Literary and Cultural Centre sits right beside the castle. It celebrates Listowel's famous writers including John B. Keane and Bryan MacMahon, and its wheelchair-accessible toilets are available for castle visitors.
