Above the Blackwater River, Lismore Castle is the private Irish home of the Dukes of Devonshire — but its historic walled gardens and contemporary art gallery welcome visitors.
This walled garden was first laid out by Richard Boyle, the 1st Earl of Cork, around 1605, and most of its walls and terraces survive. Today it mixes ornamental borders with vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers grown for the castle, plus contemporary sculpture.
Created in the 19th century for the 6th Duke of Devonshire under Joseph Paxton, this informal area of trees, shrubs and open lawns is threaded with meandering paths. The stately yew avenue at its heart is much older than the garden itself.
You enter through the Reilig Garden, named for the medieval graveyard within it. Some of the surrounding walls date back to the 13th century.
Your garden ticket also covers the contemporary gallery in the west wing of the castle, which stages one major international exhibition a year alongside projects, events and a learning programme. It is sometimes closed between exhibitions.
A picnic basket for two (€50) is filled with seasonal salads from the gardens and prepared by the castle chef, with freshly made cakes and scones. Available Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from June to August, booked at least 48 hours ahead.
Children have a play area and swing, the Story Tree to find, and numbered plants to track down using the garden leaflet. Dogs are welcome on a lead but not in the gallery.
