A modern visitor centre in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht telling the story of Patrick Pearse, writer and 1916 Rising leader, and the landscape, language and culture that inspired him — with his summer cottage a short bog-side stroll away.
A short stroll across the bog brings you to Teach an Phiarsaigh, the three-room cottage where Patrick Pearse, writer, educator and leader of the 1916 Rising, spent his summers. It is preserved just as he left it in 1915, with local guides on hand to tell its story.
Inside the visitor centre, an interactive exhibition brings to life the unique landscape, language and culture of south Connemara that shaped Pearse's work, and shows how Irish, Gaelic games and traditional music are still part of everyday life here.
A scenic looped walk crosses the Connemara bog from the visitor centre to the cottage, with views over the lakes and the Twelve Bens. Allow about 1–1.5 hours in total for the site.
