A wild valley of pine forest, craggy mountains and a mirror-like lake in West Cork — home to the source of the River Lee and the 6th-century monastic island of St Finbarr.
On a tiny island in Gougane Barra Lake, this 19th-century chapel stands on the site where St Finbarr, patron saint of Cork, founded a monastery in the 6th century. Walk the causeway to explore the oratory, its stained-glass windows, the holy well, and the ruins of an 18th-century hermitage. A famously romantic wedding venue.
A short looped motor trail winds through the park offering sweeping views of the deep valley and its steep wooded sides. Takes under 10 minutes without stops — ideal for those with limited mobility or pressed for time.
Picnic tables are scattered throughout the forest park, and benches with mountain views sit near St Finbarr's Oratory. Pack supplies before you arrive — the nearest shop is in Ballingeary, 7km away. Toonsbridge Dairy in nearby Inchigeelagh is a great stop for local cheeses and provisions.
Six waymarked trails start from the lower and upper car parks, suiting all abilities. Slí an Ghaorthaidh (0.5km, 30min) is a multi-access nature trail with 10 stops. Slí Dhoire na Coise (1.8km, 45min) follows the River Lee to the lakeshore. Slí na Laoi (1.3km, 1hr) traces the infant Lee through Coomroe valley. Slí an Easa (1.8km, 1.5hrs, strenuous) passes waterfalls with valley views. Slí na Sléibhe (2.5km, 2hrs, strenuous) climbs into open mountainside with the park's best panoramic views. Slí an Choim Rua (0.5km, 30min, moderate) gives a quick taste of the forest.
The diverse habitats — from wetlands and lake shore to open mountain — support deer, badgers, foxes, stoats, and pine martens. Birdlife includes peregrine falcons, ravens, willow warblers, cuckoos, and white-tailed sea eagles. Moor grasses, bog mosses, and the rare Fox's Cabbage thrive on the slopes.
Brown trout fishing is available on Gougane Barra Lake. The season runs from 17 March to 12 October. Permits are available from the gift shop. The lake is not stocked — all fish are native.
