Ireland's most southerly point and its most iconic lighthouse — the 54 m granite tower of Fastnet Rock, known as "Ireland's Teardrop", can only be experienced by boat tour through the whale- and dolphin-rich waters of West Cork.
The classic trip: sail from Baltimore or Schull through Roaringwater Bay, stop for 2–3 hours on Cape Clear Island, then circumnavigate the Fastnet Rock at close quarters. On Cape Clear Island, visit the Cape Clear & Fastnet Rock Heritage Centre, which houses an excellent 3D multimedia display on the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse alongside island artefacts and the O'Driscoll archive. Open daily June to September; by appointment at other times.
Sail out at sunset (departures ~18:00 in June, ~19:00 in July/August) and watch the last light strike the granite tower as the Atlantic turns gold. A shorter, more atmospheric alternative to the day tour. €42–48 adult / €90–120 family.
Two marked loops explore the island's southern cliffs: the Green Loop (Lúb na Cnoiciní, 4 km, easy) and the Red Loop (Lúb an Ghleanna, 6 km, moderate with 254 m elevation gain). Both deliver spectacular sea views, birdlife, and a glimpse of the old 1818 lighthouse and Napoleonic tower.

The waters around Fastnet and Roaringwater Bay are among the best in Ireland for cetaceans. Skippers will divert to give you the best views when whales, dolphins, porpoises or basking sharks are spotted. Seals haul out on the rock itself and seabirds crowd the lighthouse ledges.
