Derrycassin Wood spills down to the shore of Lough Gowna, its 179 acres hiding the ruins of an old estate walled garden — plus a playground and picnic benches that make it an easy family outing.
Things to Do
Walled Garden Walk (2.3 km)
Marked in red dots, roughly 45 minutes. It passes the site of Derrycassin House (no buildings remain) and reaches the ruins of the walled garden, where high brick walls and ornate gates stand among rhododendrons.
Main Avenue Walk (3.2 km)
The longest route, marked with white dots and taking about an hour, runs parallel to the Lough Gowna shoreline with occasional lake views and benches to rest on.
Playground and picnic area
A children's playground and picnic benches sit beside the car park, making this an easy stop for families; there is also a quieter picnic site by the lake edge.
Lough Gowna shoreline
The wood hugs the shoreline of Lough Gowna and has several viewing points and benches along the lakeshore — bring a picnic for the water's edge.
Boat to Inchmore Island
From nearby Dring Lake you can push a boat out across Lough Gowna to Inchmore Island, where the ruins of a sixth-century monastery founded by St Columba survive.
