About

A short, easy boardwalk trail through Atlantic blanket bog to a stony shoreline, with panoramic views across Bellacragher Bay to Achill Island and east to the Nephin Beg Mountains — part of the Mayo Dark Sky Park.

Things to Do

Walk the Boardwalk Loop

A gentle 2 km loop (approx. 30–45 min) on boardwalk and level ground through blanket bog and along a sheltered shoreline. Suitable for all ages and abilities — an ideal leg-stretch on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Walk the Boardwalk Loop

Spot Ancient Pine Stumps

Look for the preserved remains of ancient pine forest — stumps emerging from the bog and scattered along the shoreline, evidence of Ireland's prehistoric woodland.

Wildlife Watching

Scan the shore and bay for otters, seals, ringed plovers, curlews, and grey herons. The sheltered waters of Bellacragher Bay attract a good variety of coastal birds.

Stargazing at a Dark Sky Site

Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail is a Gold Tier Dark Sky viewing point. On clear nights you can see the Milky Way, planets, and meteor showers with the naked eye. The viewing site is open year-round.

Visit Ballycroy Visitor Centre

Just 8 km north, the visitor centre has an interactive exhibition on the park's biodiversity and heritage, plus the Tóchar Daithí Bán nature trail (2 km, wheelchair-accessible).
