About

A 340-million-year-old limestone plateau scattered with megalithic tombs, glacial boulders and 360-degree views, crossed by over 10km of waymarked walking trails. Free to visit all year round, it is one of Ireland's finest prehistoric relict landscapes.

Things to Do

Walk the four trails

Four waymarked routes start from the car parks: Trail 1 Calf House Dolmen Trail (1.3km, ~35 min), Trail 2 Giant's Leap Trail (2.7km), Trail 3 Promontory Fort Trail (2.9km) and Trail 4 Tullygobban Lough Trail (1.6km). Expect bog bridges, gravel paths and stone steps over karst limestone.

Read the geology

Limestone laid down in a tropical sea 340 million years ago, glacial erratics deposited by Ice Age glaciers, and the Lost Valley with its dolines and sinkholes where a river vanished underground are all explained by interpretation panels.

Visit the interpretative centre

A small all-weather, wheelchair-accessible centre near the main car park explains the tombs, geology and stories, and houses the public toilets.

Picnic with a view

Picnic benches sit at beautiful viewpoints across the park. Trail 1 is the easy, multi-access option with 360-degree views and is suitable for all ages and abilities, including pushchairs.

Tackle the Cavan Way

The 26km long-distance Cavan Way from Dowra to Blacklion runs through the park, entering on Trail 2 and leaving via Trail 4. A treasure-hunt map is also available for families.
