A three-century-old family estate near Athy where twelve acres of garden, woodland and meadow sit alongside a garden-to-table barn, pantry, shop and gallery. The gardens are private; today you visit for the food, the farm walks and the seasonal landscape.
Self-guided trails run through farmland, woodland, parkland and old tracks, past historic farm buildings and a sculpture park. QR codes at interpretation points reveal photographs, stories and archival material about the estate.
More than twelve acres of garden, woodland and parkland surround the house, unfolding as intimate spaces: herbaceous borders and shrubberies, an old rock garden, a yew walk and pergola, a sundial garden and an orchard.
In continuous production for more than 150 years, this working garden grows fruit, vegetables, herbs and cut flowers that travel the short distance to the estate kitchens and tables.
A woodland garden surrounded on all sides by water, planted with candelabra primulas, hostas, ferns and iris. Winding paths along the water make it the quietest, most atmospheric part of the estate.
Hour-long tours given by owner James Fennell cover the house's history, its interiors and inhabitants, the Quakers and the nearby village of Ballytore. By prior appointment, May to September.
Seasonal breakfast, lunch and dinner in a barn overlooking the walled kitchen garden, built on estate produce, neighbouring farms and Irish suppliers. Dinner is Friday and Saturday only.
