About
Founded in 1147, Bective Abbey is Ireland's second Cistercian foundation and one of the best-preserved medieval cloisters in the country — a free, roofless maze of gothic arches on the banks of the Boyne.

Refuel at Bective Tea Rooms
A short drive away, this restored gate lodge of the Bective House estate serves breakfast, brunch, coffee and freshly baked confectionery, and is open for Afternoon Tea on Sundays.
Explore the cloister
The star of the site: a well-preserved cloister of cinque-foiled and decorated gothic arches on clustered pillars, carved from hard Ardbraccan stone, with delicate foliage and a hawk-like bird still visible on several columns.
Wander the ruined passages and tower
The roofless remains date mainly from the 13th to 15th centuries and include the church, chapter house and cloister. Blocked arches, interrupted staircases and dead ends make it a genuine place to explore rather than just look at.
Walk down to Bective Bridge on the Boyne
The abbey sits on a high northern bank of the River Boyne, under a kilometre south-east off the R161 from Connell's Cross. The old bridge beside the site is worth the short walk.
