A striking 15-metre white cone-shaped beacon perched on dramatic West Cork cliffs since 1849, offering sweeping 360° views over Baltimore Harbour, Sherkin Island, and the wild Atlantic.
A lovely 1.6 km (22 min each way) stroll from the harbour along winding country lanes with stone walls and patchwork fields. Start at Dún na Séad in the village centre and follow Beacon Road south. Allow 45 minutes round trip plus time at the top.
From the beacon's elevated position, soak in unobstructed views across Baltimore Harbour, Sherkin Island, Cape Clear, and the vast Atlantic. On clear days you can watch fishing boats, ferries, and possibly spot whales or dolphins in the waters below.
This is one of West Cork's finest sunset spots. Bring a flask of coffee or a picnic and watch the sun dip below the Atlantic. The white tower glows in the golden light — a photographer's dream. Then head back to Baltimore for a pint in Bushe's Bar or The Algiers Inn.
For the quickest option, drive to the tiny car park at the end of Beacon Road and tackle the steep 300-metre climb through a grassy field. The path is worn but can be muddy and slippery — wear sturdy shoes and mind the unfenced cliff edges.
The waters around Baltimore are rich with marine life. From the beacon's clifftop vantage, scan for seals, harbour porpoises, and seabirds. Dolphins are common year-round, and from April to December you might spot minke whales — or even humpbacks in late summer.
Combine your visit with a ferry trip to Sherkin Island (10 min) or Cape Clear (40 min). Back in the village, Dede at the Customs House holds two Michelin stars, while Casey's and Bushe's Bar offer excellent seafood and pints with harbour views.
