A captivating Robinsonian-style estate where sculpted yews slope to a lake, ancient oaks line a prehistoric glen, and the scent of roses fills the summer air — all bequeathed to the Irish nation by its devoted last owner, Corona North.
Start at the rear of Altamont House on the Broad Walk, flanked by clipped yews and old rose beds. Lawns slope down to a 2.5-acre ornamental lake ringed with rare trees, rhododendrons, and a stone bridge — look for ducks, herons, and the resident peacocks. Benches and secluded spots dot the shoreline.
From the lake, follow the stream down into the wilder Lower Glen. Here a canopy of 500-year-old oaks and massive granite boulders lines a fast-flowing stream with stepping stones and little bridges. The path reaches the banks of the River Slaney, then climbs back up via the famous 100 hand-cut granite steps — steep, with handrails and benches for rests.
Altamont holds one of Ireland's largest snowdrop collections — over 100 varieties carpet the grounds from late January. Spring also brings daffodils (hundreds of cultivars), followed by a superb rhododendron and camellia display. Summer delivers old-fashioned and modern roses, while autumn belongs to colchicums and cyclamen.
At the top of the woodland climb, a mown path through Sunset Field leads to this six-column domed folly, built in 1998. Sit on its stone balustrades and take in panoramic views back over the woods and towards the Blackstairs and Wicklow Mountains.
The historic walled garden houses Altamont Plant Sales, run by plantsman Robert Miller, selling rare trees, shrubs, snowdrops, and perennials propagated from the estate. The Walled Café (Sugar & Spice) serves tea, coffee, homemade cakes, scones, sandwiches, and salads. A small gift shop and the Corona North Commemorative Borders are also here.
Free guided tours are offered Monday to Friday (and daily during peak season, roughly February to November). Tours last about 30 minutes, covering the main formal gardens, after which you're free to explore the 40 acres on your own. Group tours can be booked by appointment.
